When you subscribe to the newsletter
We ask for your email address. Nothing else. No name, no phone number, nothing beyond the address we need to send you the newsletter.
When you visit the website
We use Google Analytics 4. This collects anonymised information about how people use the site — which pages they visit, roughly where they're from, and how long they spend reading. We see patterns and aggregates. We can't identify individuals from this data.
Your email address is used for one thing: sending you the Crosswind newsletter. We don't use it to market other products to you, profile you, or pass it to third parties for their own purposes.
The analytics data helps us understand which articles are useful so we write more of the right content and less of the wrong kind.
Two companies process data on our behalf:
• Beehiiv — our newsletter platform. They store subscriber email addresses and handle delivery. Their privacy policy is at beehiiv.com/privacy.
• Google Analytics — they receive anonymised usage data from our website. You can opt out at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
We don't sell data. We don't share it with advertisers. Sponsors appear in the newsletter and are clearly labelled as such, but they don't receive subscriber data as part of any sponsorship arrangement.
Under UK GDPR:
• Newsletter subscriptions — consent. You gave it when you signed up, and you can withdraw it at any time by unsubscribing.
• Website analytics — legitimate interest. Understanding how the site is used helps us improve it, and we've assessed that this interest doesn't override reader privacy given the anonymised nature of the data.
We hold your email address for as long as you're subscribed. Once you unsubscribe, your data is removed from our active mailing list. Google Analytics data is retained for 14 months, which is the platform default.
Under UK GDPR you have the right to:
• See what data we hold about you.
• Ask us to correct inaccurate data.
• Ask us to delete your data.
• Withdraw consent for the newsletter at any time — the unsubscribe link is in every edition.
• Object to processing based on legitimate interest.
• Make a complaint to the ICO (ico.org.uk) if you believe we've mishandled your data.
